Energetic Hygiene Part 1: Energy & Movement

““Life is never stagnation. It is constant movement, un-rhythmic movement, as we as constant change. Things live by moving and gain strength as they go.” – Bruce Lee

Most of us know the physical benefits of movement activities like exercising, yoga or dance. Many wellness practitioners and brands focus on the physical body as the primary vehicle for health and well being. However, from an energetic perspective, the physical body is but one of many bodies encompassing each individual. Physically, we are all energy, and everything around us is energy. Energy vibrates at different speeds and due to these vibrational differences, energy takes on different qualities. Energy vibrating at a fast speed is light, fine and quick to transform. Energy vibrating at a slow speed is heavy, dense and slow to transform. Our physical body is energy that vibrates at a slower speed, thus the density of our bodies. Anyone trying to lose or gain weight, or change the shape of their body, understands how difficult it is to transform the body. This is due to its slow vibration and dense quality. Yet there are other bodies that surround each of us, the subtle bodies, that are less dense, lighter and vibrate at a higher frequency. These energies are easier to transform. Our physical and subtle or energetic bodies are not separate, but are interconnected and interrelated- they affect and influence each other. As movement of our bodies has benefits for our physical bodies, it also has benefits for our energetic bodies and our energy. As our energetic bodies are comprised of energy that is lighter and easier to transform, this presents us with an opportunity to use this energy to shift our energy and heal our bodies, minds and spirits. Movement can be a form of energetic hygiene to optimize the flow of energy throughout the body and cleanse the energetic field.

Energy Points: Chakras

The chakras are frequently described as energy points, wheels or knots located throughout the physical body that receive, give and store energy. There are 7 chakras located along the spine, as well as 22 minor chakras throughout the body, 1 below the feet connecting us to earth and at least 3 above the head, connecting us to the heavens. The chakras receive energy we receive from sunlight, air, food, and our environment and distribute the energy throughout our bodies to our blood and organs. The chakras also release energy into the aura, where it can be transformed. If our vibration is strong and high, energy moves quickly or flows through the chakras, optimizing and effectively using the energy. If our vibration is week and low, the energy moves slowly or stagnates in the chakras. Stagnant energy can cause blockages, preventing the flow to other chakras and thus parts of the body. This can trigger emotional problems, illness or disease.

The Aura

The aura is an electromagnetic energy field that surrounds all living things. The aura is comprised of energetic layers, subtle bodies, each vibrating at a higher frequency than the one beneath it. There are also subtle energy points, which much like the chakras, are points of concentrated energy that connect the layers and permit energy to flow between them. If strong, and vibrating at a high frequency, the aura becomes a protective shield against negative energy. If weak, vibrating at a low frequency or damaged, it can allow negative energy into your energetic field, sapping you of valuable energy or allow your energy to merge with another, dimming your will. When energy vibrates at a lower frequency, it is stagnant, more difficult to move or change. Much like in the chakras, low vibrational energy in your aura or subtle bodies can lead to emotional problems, illness and disease. While the aura wants to remain light, stagnant energy causes heaviness, changing the characteristics of the aura and influencing the expression personality and emotions. People with week, low vibration or damaged aura may often have difficulty asserting themselves or their will or become involved in relationships that do not serve their interests; their energy has been high jacked to serve another. For these reasons, we understand how important it is to maintain a strong, secure and high vibration in our aura.

Why Movement

Our bodies contain energy centers and fields that receive and distribute energy into and through our bodies. To maintain the health of our bodies, from the physical to the energetic or subtle, we must keep air, blood and energy flowing within our bodies. Intentional movement accomplishes all three.

There is much energy stored in our bodies over our lifetime, some of which is beneficial, as it holds memory, knowledge and the development of wisdom. This stored energy can also include trauma, pain, fear, and anger, which can build up like plaque on our teeth and cause cavities (holes in the enamel) and infection if not cleared regularly. By moving our bodies, increasing breath and blood flow to the cells of our physical body, we can also open our energy centers to circulate energy, receive and release energy. In doing so, we can restore the balance of energy within our bodies, release energy that is no longer serving us, and create space for new energy to be received. This flow of energy is part of what creates “runners high,” the feeling of euphoria of restoring balance to the physical and energetic bodies.

Movement also invites us to express gratitude for the human body, and the work it does for each of us to support life, self expression and manifestation of our life’s purpose all of which raise the vibration of our aura.

Note that above I mentioned intentional movement. By intentional I am referring to movement that is practiced mindfully or intuitively: there is an awareness or “knowingness” that informs the movement. Movement that is forced, or performed with ill intentions, hate, fear will not have a high vibrational effect, but a low vibrational effect and can in fact cause harm to the aura.

As a mother working full time and parenting an active 3 year old, movement is an essential technique to keep flowing through my chakras and cleanse my aura. Movement helps me clear my mind, tune into my body, and move stagnant energy (stress) accumulated throughout the week. I practice yoga at least twice a week, sometimes following a yoga instructor virtually, other times just flowing through poses that feel right for me in the moment. Approximately 5 minutes into my yoga practice, I can already feel the energy flowing and the release of tension in my lower back and shoulders, where I told to hold my stress. I  stretch and dance throughout the day, while playing with my child, cooking, moisturizing my skin with oils and butters after bathing. Once or twice a week, I practice a movement healing session for an hour, during which I intuitively move my body based on “listening” to what my body tells me it needs: Tension, tightness and pain are in invitation to move and release, to contract and expand; Joy and power is an invitation to stomp and spin, to reach high and dig deep. Sometimes I cry or laugh, I can express and release emotions I didn’t “know” where there. Always, I feel light as a feather, buzzing or electric even: high vibration aura, energy flowing through the chakras. Clean.

What forms of movement do you practice? Do you notice any impact on your energy or vibe while or after movement? What forms of movement might you try to improve the vibration or flow of energy?
