Tropical astrology tells us this this New Moon, as well as Saturn, Jupiter, Mercury, Venus and Pluto are in Aquarius. We are being invited to detach, go inward and bring the best of our individual selves to innovate, to cast our vision for the future. However, for many of us, this call to detach and go inward does not align with what we are feeling and experiencing on a collective level. It is not the time to go off on your own, isolate and focus only on the self. We cannot build new futures in isolation, not in this time. While we cannot connect in the same ways that we may have before January 2020, we must resist the dangerous temptation of isolation and disconnection.
In Sidereal astrology, this New Moon (a conjunction or merged energy between the Sun & Moon) lands in the final degrees of Capricorn, with Mercury (retrograde), Venus, Jupiter, Saturn and Pluto following behind, in that order. Capricorn energy calls us to get our world(s) in order, to take stock of reality, understand the limits so that we can fine tune how we operate within them. With this intense Capricorn energy in the sky, this is a final opportunity to assess our reality, to become aware of it, to feel it, to consider how we communicate, how we connect, how we ascribe meaning to it, and what structures define our lives within it. We are being called to take inventory of this world we have and how we have fashioned ourselves within it. Before we cast a vision of the future, we need to see with clarity what kind of world are we living in now. Take your blinders off and see the world for what it is. New Moons are times to plant seeds, to push the seed deep into the ground, into darkness and to gather and prepare the things that will nurture and grow the seed, a new future. What does this reality already have to support a seed, and what does it need in order to grow, to create something new?
Mars in Aries is in conflict with this Capricorn energy of assessing and dealing with reality. Mars in Aries represents physical action expressing individual will- I CAN DO IT! We are seeing so many instances of this energy, from individuals denying the COVID reality and partying, traveling, not wearing masks to assert their individual will, to people in power summoning their minions to attack the Capitol building, all because they can. Our country’s obsession with individualism has led us to this moment, when in the face of collective death, we lean on individual will to cope, to power through it. When we focus on the individual, it is easy to define, understand and regulate yourself, because you have one small snapshot of who you are and what you are. It is easy to lose sight of how one person’s behavior impacts another. This reality is showing us the consequences of that behavior. Individualism is a false image, deceitful in its simplicity, deceptive in its disconnection to the outside world. This is the domain of Neptune: illusions, fantasy. The tension between Mars and all the planets in Capricorn challenges the view of the individual self: Who’s image are you fashioning your “self” after? Is that grounded in reality? Is that grounded in the legacy of your ancestors?
Venus & Jupiter are also in conjunction, with their energies merged. Both of these planets represent expansion on some level. Venus, with dominion over love, beauty, and art, expands through connection. Jupiter, with dominion over meaning and beliefs, expands by adding more depth -items and ideas expand or become greater when we believe in them, when we have faith. Venus-Jupiter merging represent abundance, more love, more beauty, more faith, more belief, more intention. We are invited expand, do more, give more, create more, love more, believe more. BE more. Not in the ways we have done so before- not with accumulation of stuff, consumption, as these are temporary and lead to an end, a limit, death. We are called to more abundant and expansive ways of being that are in alignment with the order of life, with discipline and maturity; to grow up, see the world around us and be more despite the hardships, the challenges, the hard work. Our collective survival depends on us being more than capitalism, more than racism, more than politics, more than money. In order to survive we must connect and be in community. We must believe in the power of connection.
There is a revolution building. It has been building since our ancestors first set foot on this land. Our continued existence as Black people is a testament to the ongoing revolution, to challenge the ordering of this reality around capital, accumulation, exclusion, violence, WHITENESS. If we are not wise about using the resources we have, each other, building relationships to support our collective survival and liberation, we face the very real possibility of oppression shape shifting, consolidating and re-organizing in new ways to further exclude, marginalize, exploit and exterminate.
This is the beginning of a New (Lunar) Year. What reality do you want to create? What seeds will you plant?
